Fire Extinguishers Sales And Service

Fire extinguisher maintenance is covered by NFPA 10. All fire extinguishers should be visually inspected and tagged annually. Standard ABC dry chemical extinguishers are required to be emptied and internally serviced every six years, and hydro-tested(pressure tested with water) every 12 years.

Basic Requirements
Although there are other types, the most common fire extinguishers in the home and business are class ABC extinguishers. Class A is used for "ordinary combustbles" - wood, cloth, paper, plastics, etc. Class B extinguishers are used to extinguish flammable liquid fires - gases, paints, solvents, etc. Class C fires involve "energized electrical equipment" where the non-conductivity of the extinguishing agent is necessary. ABC fire extinguishers cover all three of these applications. Some of the basic requirements for typical ABC fire extinguisher placement are as follows:
- Must be readily accessible and in the "path of egress".
- Must be located at least 4 inches above the floor.
- Maximum travel distance of 75 ft to the extinguisher
- Maximum square footage of 11,250 s.f. per extinguisher
- Minimum ratings of 2-A and 5-B (class C is based on the nearby AB fire danger)
